Manuka honey is delicious, nutritious and incredibly versatile! It contains so many unique properties and flavour profiles which have made it increasingly popular to use in the kitchen. Today we’re going to take a look at some of the many ways you can incorporate it into your baking and cooking.
Baking With Manuka Honey
Manuka can act as an alternative sweetener to sugar in small quantities (e.g in tea), but it shouldn’t be used as the primary sweetener in baking. Instead, add a half a cup or two to the recipe to enhance the flavour and give your baking something a little bit extra. It does add to the liquid content so be sure to reduce the other liquids in the recipe - for every one cup of honey reduce the other liquids by ¼ cup.
Honey will caramelise and burn faster than regular sugar so make sure you reduce the temperature in the oven by around 10 degrees and keep a close eye on it. It might also be necessary to add baking soda - ¼ teaspoon for every cup of honey - to ensure your baking gets lift, as the acidity in manuka honey can cause it to go flat. Some popular things to add manuka to include muffins, scones, banana bread and biscuits.
Manuka Honey for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner
Manuka’s versatility means it can be consumed at pretty much any time of the day. In the morning add a teaspoon of pure manuka honey to your tea as an alternative to sugar or drizzle some over your muesli or oats for a delicious and nutritious start to your day. You can’t forget the classic honey on toast either!
For lunch make a nice big sandwich with the scrumptious home-baked honey bread you baked overnight.
Dinner time is when Manuka Honey can really show off its versatility. It is popularly used in glazes for meat, sauces for stir-frys and rice dishes and even as a salad dressing. The opportunities are almost limitless and thanks to the healing properties and manuka health benefits you know you’re doing your body some good!
For dessert, get your favourite flavour of ice cream, grab your jar of manuka honey (PURITI, of course) and drizzle some all over. It will change your life!
