What’s the buzz with Manuka honey? - PURITI

What’s the buzz with Manuka honey?

You’ve probably heard it all before when the winter chills come, make yourself a cup of hot water with honey and lemon. As much as it comes across as one of those made up remedies, honey, specifically Manuka honey actually has healing properties.

The first thing to know which is possibly most important is that there are a lot of different honeys available for purchase, it’s really important that the product is natural and free from any added sugars.

Secondly, honey has so much goodness in it, even when you aren’t sick it’s great to have in your diet. Rich in many important antioxidants, it helps fight disease-causing free radicals and can reduce the risk of cell damage. It also holds anti-inflammatory properties.

So why exactly do people swear by it when it comes to fighting off colds? High grade Manuka honey, such as PURITIs’ can soothe the lining of the throat with a delectable creamy taste. This highlights the antimicrobial properties of this unique product. It’s so good it can even be used on burn victims because of those healing properties.

Nutritionist and health and lifestyle blogger Danijela Unkovich from Healthy Always, has offered up some really interesting ways to add honey into your diet, making it even easier to fight off any nasty winter colds. You can read her original article on Newshub here.

Adding honey over sugar to your baked goods:

This refers back to using natural sweeteners in your foods instead of artificial sugars and sucrose. Because of the consistency of honey it’s not a straight swap, 1 cup of honey for 1 cup of sugar, try ¾ of a cup of honey for every cup of sugar instead. If you are using honey to make a sauce or liquid with its worth remembering it burns quicker than sugar. Not only is it good to stay away from non-natural sugars, it’s also packed with vitamins and minerals.

    Sauces, dressings, marinades:

Another way to add Manuka honey and another way to reduce sugar intake is to use it instead of high in sugar salad dressings and sauces. Whether it’s drizzled over roasted carrots or used on your favourite meats, honey doesn’t just have to be for sweet dishes.

So, next time you feel a tickle in your throat as the cooler months take their toll on you, try some Manuka honey to fix you right up.
